Junior Professorship for Modeling of Social-Ecological Systems with a Focus on Forests at the Faculty of Environment and Natural Resources.

- Id no.: 3504 This is a grade W1-professorship to which performance payments can be offered. This professorship is suitable for highly qualified early career researchers at an early stage in their careers. Conditions governing the appointment in accordance with section 51 (3) LHG apply. The necessary short to medium-term adaptation of forests and forestry to global change is an enormous challenge for society due to the diverse ecosystem services provided by forests. Solution scenarios need to be developed and the option space for management and governance needs to be mapped out following a systemic perspective on the basis of social science concepts and focusing on social-ecological modeling of sustainable forest use under the conditions of global and regional change. This includes the development of innovative theories and interdisciplinary methods for data collection and analysis. The successful candidate is expected:
- to have a relevant PhD-thesis and post-doc experience in the field of qualitative and quantitative modeling of complex, adaptive social-ecological systems, if possible on the basis of social science concepts -to have comprehensive knowledge of methods of system analysis of social-ecological systems and innovative interdisciplinary methods for data collection and analysis, documented through publications and teaching experience
- to develop a junior research group as a methodological competence center for the modeling of forest/environment-human systems in Central Europe within the faculty and in association with other research institutions; funding for two researchers (100 % each) for 6 years can already be guaranteed and is part of the package
- to cooperate with existing or developing joint research projects at the faculty, in particular participation in the Cluster of Excellence initiative »Future Forests« and possible follow-up projects
- to lecture on methods of social-ecological modeling and innovative interdisciplinary data collection and analysis to the extent of 4 SWS; after a successful mid-term evaluation, it will be 6 SWS
- to have documented experience of working together in interdisciplinary teams, supervising students and acquiring third-party funded projects
- to have very good command of English, good command of German Place of work is Freiburg im Breisgau. Prerequisites for the employment are a university degree, an outstanding PhD-thesis and an excellent publication record. This position is a fixed term of four years. After a successful mid-term evaluation, it will be extended by two years. The following application documents are to be submitted:
